Registering a marriage with a foreigner in Ukraine has its own peculiarities and requires careful preparation of documents to ensure compliance with Ukrainian legislation. Conditions and procedure for registering a marriage with a foreigner

Registering a marriage with a foreign citizen is carried out at the State Civil Status Registration Offices (SCSRO) of Ukraine and authorised organisations listed on the website of the Ministry of Justice, according to the following procedure:

1. Submitting an application
   The couple personally submits a written application to the selected SCSRO.
2. Setting the date of marriage registration
   The standard waiting period is one month. In some cases, such as pregnancy, birth of a child, etc., the period may be reduced to 1 day.
3. Checking the legality of a foreigner's stay
   The institution that accepted the application for marriage registration verifies the legality of the foreign citizen's stay in Ukraine by sending a request to the regional unit of the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
4. Marriage registration After checking the documents, an official marriage registration ceremony takes place and a Marriage Certificate is issued in 2 (two) copies.

Documents required for registering a marriage with a foreigner:

From the citizen of Ukraine:

• Passport of a citizen of Ukraine (original);
• Certificate of Place of Residence (residence registration);
• Documents on the termination of previous marriages (if any);

From the foreign citizen:

• Passport (with a notarised translation into Ukrainian).
• A document confirming the legality of staying in Ukraine (visa, Temporary or Permanent Residence Permit, border crossing stamp).
• Certificate of Marital Status (absence of other marriage) issued in the country of origin (at the request of the Marriage Registration Department).
• Documents on the termination of previous marriages (Divorce Certificate, Court Decision, Death Certificate of the former partner).
• Certificate of Place of Residence (residence registration).

All documents issued abroad must be legalised (apostille or consular legalisation) and translated into Ukrainian with notarisation.

Marriage registration through “Diia” portal

Currently, marriage registration through “Diia” portal is available only to Ukrainian citizens who have an electronic digital signature (EDS). Foreign citizens are cannot register a marriage through this portal.

Expedited procedure (“Marriage in a Day”)

Couples can use the Marriage in a Day service, which reduces the waiting period to 1-2 days. To do this, you need to conclude an Agreement with an accredited service provider and submit the relevant documents.
